Lake Mead @ Liberty Christian Tournament (CA):
Lake Mead traveled to Hungtinton Beach, CA for a large tournament. Even before taking the court, there were some challenges to overcome. The travel was one, but then they had to change their standard rotation due to not having two players available, Kailyn Poteat and Jocelyn Cox. Last weekend Cox was named to the all tournament team and has significantly contributed on the court with 111 assists, 37 blocks and 72 digs.  So Friday night on the beach Coach Diana Lewis  worked with the team on a 5-1 rotation and had to make some changes in where her girls normally play.  They went to a starting squad of 4 underclassmen and 3 upperclassmen.
Despite the adjustments, the Eagles faired quite well, taking 2nd place in the tournament.  This was their first loss of the year.
“Over all, I am pleased with what we were able to accomplish in the time we
had to learn the new rotation,” Coach Lewis said after the matches. “Obviously, we would have loved to have had another win but ‘it is what it is.’”
All pool play was best out of 2 with no 3rd game.

Lake Mead @ Meadows: Facing each other for the third match in 5 days, didn’t change much. Lake Mead defeated The Meadows in three games(25-19, 26-24, 25-18) in similar fashion as they did at their tournament over the weekend. (See story below) Sophomore Ashley Newton continues to be a solid player both offensively and defensively-she recorded 13kills, 8 digs and 6 blocks. Jocelyn Cox and Jessica Rinaldi combined for 24 assits, giving them  265 on the season. The Eagles are now 17-0.

Fallon @ Douglas: Douglas improved their record to 13-0, while winning their first division match of the season against the Greenwave, 25-12, 25-11, 25-18.  The Tigers offense was to much to handle as they recorded 46 kills for the match. Their defense was also tough at the net totaling 30 blocks, 12 from Jessica Waggoner.

Galena @ Damonte Ranch: It took Damonte 4 games to put away Galena en route to their first division win. Despite solid play from Galena’s Casey Burke, 12 kills, 4 blocks, 9 digs, 2 aces, the Mustangs were overpowering at the net where Scharae and Chaiymin Steel combined for 41 kills. Damonte added 49 digs to stymie Galena’s offensive attack. Damonte improves to 14-5, Galena falls to 7-5.

Fri/Sat 9/5-6, Eureka: Over this past weekend, the Lady Vandals improved their record to 7-1.  On Friday, the Vandals started league play with a double header against the Wells Leopards.  Eureka downed Wells in straight games to win both matches -1st match: 25-16, 25-16….2nd match 25-17, 25-13.  Jackie Briones led the team with 9 aces and 6 kills.

Saturday, the Lady Vandals traveled to Jackpot for the Jackpot Varsity Volleyball Challenge where the Vandals began play against the home team Jaguars.  Overcoming the long trip, the home crowd, and the scrappy Jaguar team, the Vandals won in straight games - 25-23, 25-15, 27-25.  Jordan Maslach tallied 15 assists, as Delayni DeWitt and Jackie Briones came up with 10 and 8 kills respectively.  Jackie Briones again led the team in aces with 6.

In the championship match, the Lady Vandals met up with the West Wendover Wolverines.  In a hard fought match, the Lady Vandals came out on top once again.  West Wendover won the first game, but the Vandals scrapped back to win the next three, taking home the trophy.  The scores were - 24-26, 25-23, 25-19, and 25-22.  Jordan Maslach was perfect on her serves, going 29 for 29 with a team leading 4 aces and had 9 assists.  Jackie Briones finished with 13 kills and 4 blocks.  Delayni DeWitt added 4 blocks and 3 saves for the Vandals.

Sat, 9/6, Lake Mead @ Lund:Following up their tournament win at Laughlin a week ago, Lake Mead continued to roll as they defeated Lund 2-0 in the first division contest for both squads.

“Because of some injuries, we had a new rotation today and got off to a slow start,” said Coach Diana Lewis following the matches. “I have a great group of girls to work with and once they got back into rhythm, we played pretty good.” Lake Mead has only senior on this years team.

Down 24-20 in the first game, Lake Mead stepped to the service line and took 6 straight points and the game. It seemed any time Lund was making a move to gain momentum, the Eagles passed the ball well and had great net play to shut down the surge.

Amanda Wellman and Ashley Newton continue to lead the team. In the two matches Wellman combined for 15 kills, 7 aces, 8 digs and 3 blocks. Newton recorded 22 kills, 1 ace, 8 digs and 4 blocks.

The Eagles and Mustangs will both be in action again this coming weekend as Lake Mead hosts a tournament the 12th and 13th.

Thurs 9/4, Douglas at Reno: Coming of an undefeated run and championship win at the Las Vegas Tournament, Douglas remained undefeated as they beat Reno in a best of 5 match.

After winning the first game 25-14, Douglas dropped the next two, 19-25 and 22-25, but rallied back to take the final two games, 25-19 and 15-9.

Sophomore Shannon Dugan led the Tigers with 14 kills, adding 7 blocks. Senior Jessica Waggoner recorded 9 kills and 9 blocks, while Mysta Townsell, a Junior, had 15 digs. Senior Megan Mitchell topped the stats with 36 assists, 19 service points, 6 kills and 4 blocks.

At the Pahrump Valley Tournament held August 29/30, Lake Mead Christian Academy went undefeated at 6-0 to win the championship. They only lost two games, both to Pahranagat Valley, in the championship match. They rallied back to take the next three games and the tournament.

Ashley Newton recorded 14 kills, 14 digs and 8 blocks. Their fine play throughout the tournament placed  them on the All-Tournament Team, with Newton, being named the MVP.
