4A Girls Golf Champion Crowned in Fashion
Tuesday, October 21st, 2008The 4A Girl’s Golf team and individual contest were challenged yesterday and today. The individual title was won in dramatic fashion as Bishop Manogue’s Alex Phillips came from behind to walk away with the championship.
After finishing 14th in last years championship, with a 177, Phillips bested that by 24 strokes, to win this year in a playoff. But it just wasn’t that simple.
Following round one action yesterday, Phillips was in fifth, shooting +8, finishing 5 strokes behind the leader, Melanie Chambers of Coronado.
In todays round, Phillips had to make up ground going into the final two holes. On the par 3, 17th hole, she birdied to give her an opportunity to force a playoff. With the par 5, 18th hole looming ahead, she placed the ball perfectly and came away with an eagle and a 153 two-day score, to force a playoff with Nicole Corpus-Massucci of Bishop Gorman.
On the first playoff, a par 5 hole, Phillips maintained her rhythm and completed another birdie to take the individual title. Corpus-Massucci bested last years score of 164, but fell just short of taking the title.
Bethany Wurster of Douglas (156) and Taylor Quienalty of Damonte Ranch (156) tied for 3rd, with Chambers (157) finishing 5th.
On the team side, Bishop Manogue won their first 4A title and their second overall, winning the 3A title in 1997.
Douglas (701) finished second, followed by Coronado (712), Silverado (722), Bishop Gorman (763) and Pahrump Valley (813).
